What would you do if you won $1 million? Splurge on gifts, invest it, donate to charity? A lucky Michigan lottery player will soon get to decide! Keep reading for details.
If you’re a lottery player who dreams of hitting the jackpot, you’ll want to pay attention. According to the Michigan State Lottery, a player in the state just won $1 million in the March 17 Mega Millions drawing.
While nobody won the estimated $254 million jackpot, there were two secondary prize winners for the drawing. One of those winners was a yet to be identified Michigan player who matched 5 white ball numbers.
While the player didn’t match the gold Mega number, their ticket is still worth a cool $1 million. This was the largest prize won in Michigan for this Mega Millions drawing. Because nobody won the jackpot prize, the next Mega Millions drawing will be worth an estimated $272 million.
Had the Michigan player opted for the Megaplier (at an extra cost of $1 more per ticket), they would have increased their prize money to $3 million because the Megaplier for this drawing was 3. For non-jackpot prizes, the Megaplier increases the amount you win by 2X, 3X, 4X, or 5X.

Surprisingly, a lot of money goes unclaimed
Now here’s a not-so-pleasant thought: According to the Michigan State Lottery, millions of dollars in lottery money goes unclaimed each year.
If you don’t claim your prize money before the ticket expires, you’ll lose out on the money for good. The money goes back to the lottery’s profit and will go to support the state’s education programs.

If you know other Michigan lottery players, be sure to share this article with them. Your kind gesture might remind them to check their lottery tickets for a winner.
As I mentioned above, millions of dollars go unclaimed each year. It’s a shame when somebody who could really use the money fails to claim their prize in time.
