Somebody in New Jersey is $4 million richer thanks to a $2 lottery ticket

Beth Torres

A penny saved might be a penny earned, but an extra dollar spent turned into an extra $3 million earned for a New Jersey lottery player. The January 31, 2023 Mega Millions drawing yielded one jackpot winner in another state, and a $1,000,000 second-prize winner in New Jersey.

But wait — there’s more! The New Jersey Mega Millions ticket that matched all five of the white ball numbers, but not the gold “Mega Ball,” was purchased with the $1 extra Megaplier option. The Megaplier number for this drawing was four. This means the winning ticket is actually worth $4 million!

Where was the lucky ticket sold?

The $4 million winner was sold at One Stop Shoppe, a convenience store in New Jersey. See the map below for the location.

What were the winning numbers for the Mega Millions drawing?

Can the winner of this or other big prizes remain anonymous?

Yes, according to the New Jersey Lottery FAQ. They do have to identify themselves to claim the prize, but New Jersey joins the ranks of states that will respect the wishes of their prize-winning customers. I have written about these recently here on NewsBreak:

What about claiming a prize with a trust or LLC?

This is even more significant for states that insist on publicizing a prize winner’s identity as it potentially offers a way to remain anonymous.

Some states specifically prohibit claiming lottery jackpots with a trust — looking at you, California! — but the New Jersey Lottery just says, “Bring in the experts.”

“In the past, players have asked questions about trusts and other legal constructs to use as vehicles to claim their prizes. If you have questions about those legal constructs, you must consult a legal professional. The Lottery cannot assist you with legal questions.”
