New guaranteed income program provides $21,600 for San Francisco low-income transgender residents

Beth Torres

San Francisco Mayor London Breed has announced a guaranteed income program to provide economic assistance to some of its more vulnerable residents.

The Guaranteed Income for Transgender People (GIFT) program will provide $1,200 a month for 18 months, for a total of $21,600, to 55 transgender residents of San Francisco. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2022. See below for details on how to apply.

Who is eligible?

According to the GIFT Program FAQ, eligibility is as follows:

“Applicants must: be 18 and up; identify as transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, or intersex; not be receiving more than $600/monthly in income; reside in the City and County of San Francisco; be willing and able to complete a survey every 3 months, and submit a complete application.”

How much will I receive?

Successful applicants will receive $1,200 per month for 18 months. This will be in the form of a Visa debit card, which will be reloaded each month.

If I am accepted into the program, will my other benefits be affected?

This is an important question which is not addressed in the FAQ. Other guaranteed income programs have stated that some benefits may in fact be affected. They recommend contacting providers of existing benefits for clarification. You can also use the contact form on the GIFT program website to inquire about this and any other questions you have.

Has San Francisco offered similar programs before?

Yes. The GIFT program is San Francisco’s third guaranteed income program to date. Prior programs include:

2020: The Abundant Birth Project has provided 135 birthing parents with $1,000 a month from the first trimester until two years post-partum.

2021: The Guaranteed Income Pilot for Artists provides $1,000 a month for up to 18 months to San Francisco artists.

In addition, the city of San Francisco is planning to launch two more guaranteed income programs geared toward youth in 2023.

How do I apply for the GIFT program?

Allow some time to submit your application as it is somewhat involved. You’ll need to download several documents, complete them online, then upload the completed documents. You may also need to upload things like proof of income and residency which can involve scanning or using a smartphone to create files.

Apply at the GIFT Program website. You can download the files needed, get additional information, and submit the completed files along with any additional documents. Be sure to complete the application by the deadline: December 15, 2022.

If you would like to receive assistance applying, you can contact the program administrator: Lyon-Martin Community Health.
