If you suspect rent inflation is a huge problem in San Jose, then the latest rent report will confirm your suspicions. A recent nationwide rental report revealed the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Jose soared almost 25 percent in the last year alone. You’ll need to shell out $2,710 a month to rent a one-bedroom unit in the city.

If you’re in the market for a two-bedroom apartment, you’ll need to open your wallet wide. That’s because the median rent for a two-bedroom in San Jose is now $3,250 a month, up a whopping 18.6 percent over the last year.

You could downsize to a studio, but you’ll still face a hefty price tag. Median rent on a studio apartment is $2,447 a month.

Studios are a popular option in San Jose for those looking to pay less in rent. However, this means the demand remains high and prices for these homes have gone up 40 percent in the last year. To put this in perspective, you’ll pay $697 a month more in rent for a studio this year than you would have a year ago.

How do San Jose rents compare to the rest of the country?

With San Jose’s high rents pricing many residents out of the market, some people are looking to relocate to other parts of the country. Remote workers are especially eager to find relief from rent inflation by relocating to a more affordable area.

Here are some options with considerably lower rent, according to a recent report from online rental platform Zumper:

  • Akron, Ohio: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $800 a month.
  • Wichita, Kansas: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $830 a month.
  • Lubbock, Texas: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $910 a month.
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $990 a month.
  • Laredo, Texas: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $1,020 a month.
  • Augusta, Georgia: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $1,100 a month.
  • Tallahassee, Florida: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $1,150 a month.
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico: Median rent on a two-bedroom apartment, $1,240 a month.
