An upscale Tex-Mex restaurant whose creators hail from Providence, Rhode Island has opened in Palm Bech Gardens.
After months of planning, this week the Jupiter-based Brown family announced the opening of Cactus Grille & Tequila Bar at The Shops of Donald Ross Village. The bar and eatery is a swanky reinvention of founder Jason and Beth Brown's original restaurant, which opened in Providence, Rhode Island in 1992.
The Browns promise their new restaurant will offer an upscale take on Tex-Mex fare in a contemporary, fiesta-like atmosphere.
"We took the idea of our parents' original restaurant and turned it on its head a bit," said Jordan, who along with her siblings Olivia and Callahan, will operate the restaurant. "We wanted to revive and elevate the restaurant into a chic and modern Tex Mex hotspot. We kept some of the iconic family recipes and added a modern twist."
Following an extensive renovation and complete transformation of the former Burger Bar space, guests are treated to a feast for the eyes with a mix of striking patterns and textures. Gold-plated ceiling and starburst light fixtures illuminate the 112-seat main dining area, which features wood paneled banquets and cactus-green chairs with custom cactus art installations and paintings throughout.
The bar area – and home to Cactus Grille’s extensive tequila collection - features ample seating and wood beamed ceiling with gold pendant lighting overhead. The private dining room is surrounded by a custom mural by Miami-based designers Chalk & Brush, and seats up to 24 guests. Cabana doors open up to an expansive terrace with 94 seats across an outdoor bar and lounge area, creating a seamless indoor/outdoor flow, while TVs across the bar and lounge make it the perfect spot to catch sports al fresco.
The menu, created by executive chef Bill Rosenberg, is meant to elevate Tex-Mex with a modern twist, covering a selection of antojitos or appetizers like Market Fish Ceviche with shrimp, peppers, red onion, leche de tigre, sweet potato, and crispy plantains; Cactus Nachos with spicy beef chili, a cactus cheese blend, jalapeños, olives, shredded lettuce, salsa, guacamole and sour cream.
Ensalada & Sopa include Chilled Tomato Gazpacho with shrimp salsa and Tijuana Style Caesar Salad, while a variety of inventive tacos feature Glazed Pork Belly, Florida Shrimp, and Moo Shoo Duck. Burritos and Fajitas are stuffed with Adobo Chicken, Dirty Marinated Churrasco, and Wild Mushroom.
Platos Principales highlight main plates like Blackened Florida Grouper with sweet corn risotto, tomatoes, basil, parmesan, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream and corn crisps; Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignon with cowboy caviar, caramelized shallot sauce, Yukon gold mashed potatoes and onion crisps; and The Cactus Chimichanga, a smoked beef brisket with Cactus cheese blend, rice and beans, aioli, Wild Bill’s chipotle BBQ, and rajas wrapped in a chipotle tortilla, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream.
Weekend brunch will feature classic dishes with a Tex-Mex twist including Biscuits & Chorizo Gravy , Huevos Rancheros, and "The Rosenberger," a steak-blend black angus burger with rajas, cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, and Wild Bill’s chipotle BBQ on brioche along with an assortment of omelets, salads, tacos and more.
As with any good Tex-Mex concept, the beverage list is highlighted by an impressive selection of over 100 tequila options as well as creative cocktails and a variety of specialty margaritas, including the Pomegranate Tito-Rita with Tito’s vodka, La Pinta pomegranate tequila, triple sec, pomegranate puree, lime juice and agave; Cervezarita with Cimarrón tequila, pineapple juice, lime juice, agave and Modelo beer; and the over-the-top Great Cactus Margarita, made with Casa Dragones Anejo, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, lime juice and agave. The extensive opening wine list features over 100 selections from around the world.
