This month our nation tips its hat to Black-owned businesses — and the men and women behind them.
Across South Florida there are hundreds of businesses that fall under this category that have made our world better, richer, and more vibrant. And — for some — just a little sweeter.
That's certainly true for the Miami men behind a new brand of liquor. And for anyone who doesn't consider themselves a whiskey drinker, this is one Florida-based brand that is hoping to change your mind.
If whiskey isn't for you, Duke & Dame co-founders Amani Macaulay and Chima Burey have a solution: a flavored spirit made with all-natural ingredients. The two men began their business with a single mission, to redefine the whiskey drinking experience with a premium product that offers a unique salted-caramel flavor.
"We have a love affair with whiskey, a felt this category was underserved," says Burey in a video interview with The Hungry Black Man. "Our vision was to redefine the whiskey drinking experience by creating a premium flavored whiskey that would stimulate the senses at each stage of the drinking process."
Out of this vision, their award-winning Duke & Dame flavored whiskey was born. The goal was simple: produce a fine whiskey that offered a unique caramel flavor profile, something they couldn't find on the market.
A high quality blend that true whiskey lovers will appreciate, the duo begins with a blend of 100% corn whiskeys, meticulously selected by master blenders (including two-year aged bourbon) to offer charred orange, spice, and toffee notes. The unique flavors and characteristics of the individual whiskeys combine to create a rich, balanced, and extremely smooth blended whiskey meant to complement the natural flavors and aromas of salted caramel.
"Whether you’re young or old, a whiskey lover or hater, or even feel you're a "strictly" vodka or tequila drinker, Duke & Dame is — if nothing else — unique," says Burey.
From the corn mash used in the distillation process to the caramel flavor used in the blending process, all ingredients used to craft Duke & Dame are 100% natural, says Burey. That additional flavor adds a nose of vanilla and butterscotch, robust notes that were inspired by the founders' love of butterscotch candy. Last, a satisfying finish offers a subtle, buttery sweetness.
"But — with only one gram of sugar per serving — it's not overly sweet," sums up Macaulay. "You get an incredible aroma, remarkable taste, and an extremely smooth finish."
Duke & Dame is available for purchase online here in 38 states, and distributed in Florida, Michigan, and New York. The company has received accolades from The Sip Awards International Spirits Competition, International Whisky Competition, New York International Spirits Competition, and San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
