A Miami-based gourmet popsicle shop is heading north with the launch of its first Palm Beach County location. In March, Morelia Gourmet Paletas — also known as Paletas Morelia — will bring its Mexican-style paletas to Boca Raton.
So, exactly what is a paletas? And what makes them better than your average American popsicle? Namely, their size. Paletas are much bigger than normal ice pops.
They're also hand-made using 100 percent natural ingredients. Morelia’s popsicles are even considered "gourmet" thanks to their use of top-quality ingredients, a combination of fresh fruit with Italian gelato or French sorbet for both a natural and indulgent flavor. (Bonus: all of Morelia’s paletas are Kosher certified by Kosher Miami).
Morelia came to life when a group of friends living in Brazil had the opportunity to try authentic Mexican paletas for the first time. The experience of eating those oversized, hand-made, all-natural popsicles was so memorable, they decided to make their own.
The first Morelia location opened in October 2016 in Miami. The founders chose the name “Morelia” as homage to the capital city of the State of Michoacán in Mexico, where it is believed the first paletas were made when people would blend fresh fruit with ice as a respite from the hot weather.
Today, the city has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved colonial buildings and layout of the historic center. The brand currently has a number of South Florida locations in Coral Gables, Wynwood, Aventura Mall, Surfside, Hollywood, Aventura Commons, South Beach, Coconut Grove, and Doral.
At Morelia, paletas are made using a number of ingredients from fresh natural fruits (such as strawberry, mango, passionfruit, or pineapple) to rich and creamy ingredients (such as Belgian chocolate, Sicilian pistachio, and coconut). Even though fruits are the most common base ingredient for the Mexican paleta, the shop also features a number of milk-based, ice cream-style paletas. Flavors include Oreo Cookies & Cream, Reese’s Peanut Butter, and Dulce de Leche filled with real dulce de leche. Out of the 16 popsicle flavors, popular options also include Pistachio, Passion Fruit, Belgian Chocolate, Banana filled with Nutella.
Morelia Paletas even allows customers to customize their popsicles: after you "pick it," you can "dip it," and then, "top it," with a number of flavorful options. The store’s signature dippings and toppings include a S'mores torched marshmallow fluff and Nutella drizzle, as well as crumbled Oreos and chopped nuts — and enough choices to make for literally hundreds of unique combinations.
To celebrate its grand opening, Paletas Morelia will be giving away free popsicles during its first weekend in business. On Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th, starting at 1 p.m., the shop will dole out a complimentary popsicle to each customer, until supplies last. Guests will be able to enjoy the full range of 16 different flavors. Dips and toppings can be chosen for an additional cost.
To receive a free paleta, customers are asked download the Paletas Morelia app. Guests must be present in-store to redeem their free paleta.
