Michigan's Best Inland Lake In Northern Michigan Isn't Torch Lake Anymore

Becca Ballard

"Up North" starts at a different location on the map for us all. Some think Michigan's Upper Peninsula is Up North, and others think of Up North as a few hours north of their own house. Either way Michigan's Up North is truly magical and hosts an amazing amount of inland lakes.

After a poll was put out in search for Michigan's Best Inland Lake, a suprise winner came about. The winner wasn't one of the popular spots like Higgins or Torch lake, it was one that may come as a surprise to some; or for those that have been, you just may not be surprised at all. After so many dominations came through, this winning lake was by far the most popular vote. Almost so surprising just do to the amount of lakes Michigan has to offer. Instead, the top pick for Michigan’s Best Inland Lake in the Northern Lower Peninsula was Sage Lake. This lake is located just about halfway between West Branch and East Tawas. It is the lake many know it as the lake of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Three islands on a large lake make up Sage Lake. This is a lake full of kayaks, boating activities and even a little partying over at 'party island.' Many loons and other amazing animals can be seen on the lake.

Sage Lake is a 785-acre all sports lake in Ogemaw County, pretty much right in the middle of West Branch and Tawas City. The lake consists of a mix of year-round residences and seasonal homes. Many families here have four or more generations enjoying this breathtaking lake.

The people, memories and events at this lake keep families coming back for more. Wake surfing, wake boarding and tubing are jus the beginning of events that can be seen on this lake. Each Fourth of July weekend, the Sage Lake Association hosts a Firecracker 5K fun run/walk that benefit the lake's fireworks display each year as well. Fishing tournaments, Kids Fun Day, boat parades, Fire & Ice Party, and paddle board events all line up the calender each summer.

Sage Lake is pretty quiet other than the summer months. This is a lake that is big enough to enjoy, yet still secluded. Escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and downstate life and enjoy all that Sage Lake offers. Lake time is a real thing and by the cast of the votes, it sounds like Sage Lake is the place to enjoy the summertime sun.

Registration for this summer’s eighth annual 5K event is at www.runsignup.com/SageLake5K.
