Birmingham Farmers Market Opens For The Season

Becca Ballard

Looking for a taste of normalcy this weekend?

The rumors are true, Birmingham Farmers Market will be back, starting this upcoming weekend. Shop and eat all while supporting your local farmers and makers.

The market will kick off its 19th season starting May 2. Every Sunday from now until October 31, enjoy the Downtown Birmingham Farmers Market at the Public Parking Lot 6 from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. Old favorites along with new vendors will be back to sell locally grown produce, meat and dairy products, artisan baked goods, fresh foods, and so much more.

It is very exciting to be back and open to foot traffic again this season as last years farmers market looked a little different with the drive-thru format as the only shopping option, due to COVID-19.

There are so many great reasons as to why to visit a farmer market but a big reason is that in making that trip you get so much more than some fresh produce shopping done, a trip to the farmers market is one of the best ways to connect with where your food comes from. Meeting and talking to farmers and food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced. Few grocery store cashiers or produce stockers will give you tips on how to cook the ingredients you buy, but farmers, ranchers, and artisans at the farmers market are often passionate cooks with plenty of free advice about how to cook the foods they are selling.

Shoppers can expect to find fresh rhubarb, parsnips, herbs, strawberries and zucchini, as well as many other options as well. As the weeks go on, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers, beans, mushrooms, kale, sugar peas, spinach and more will be available.

Food vendors are a hit here, but along with these vendors one can find vendors selling floral bouquets, hanging baskets, garden flats, plant and other options similar as well.

Although being an outdoor activity, visitors will be required to wear masks into the market and social distance, per guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. There will be a limit to the size of the crowds to make social distancing easier.

Shop local and visit this amazing market right downtown Birmingham. Check out their website here for further information.

Every Sunday May 2 - October 31, 2021 from 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.
