Tucked away in the basement of a ten-story office building on Shelby Street, what was known as a former bank vault is now something so much more.
Shelby opened its doors in the Financial District after two years of planning and building all through the pandemic.
Shelby Bar, which began serving "handcrafted cocktails and food" a few weeks ago, is a flight below Shelby Street at Congress in Detroit's Financial District.
The little details found in this space are unique and can be very much appreciated. Shelby lies in the pairing of old and new, and you'll see that in everything experienced here, from the food and drinks to the artwork, decor and ambiance. Owner, Tarun Kajeepeta, made sure to make this environment classy, yet unassuming. Kajeepeta also owns Coffee Down Under next door, which is an Australian-inspired coffee shop that focuses on amazing coffee and sustainability. From morning until night Kajeepeta makes sure to have the beverages the community knows and wants.
Much of the design in Shelby still shows life of its earlier days as a bank vault. Velvet seats mix with metal and stone is only the beginning of detials you'll find around here. Terrazzo countertops match the restored floors as well and there is an eye-catching back bar that was built by Fillmore in Woodbridge. The bank vault itself now acts as a seating area. These details are all so unique and make the place as a whole so inspiring and fancied. Despite knowing the huge undertake of this restoration, Kajeepeta made It work. Now this speakeasy is a crown pleaser and bucket list item for the community and those that maybe don't even live in the area both.
The menu is a la carte menu that is split into two categories: savory and sweet. There is also appetizers, main courses and well of course, dessert. It starts with a fixed-price menu of two craft cocktails from among six choices, and three food courses for $99 per person.
