Southern Michigan's Pet Friendly Beaches

Becca Ballard

As much as you like to swim in Michigan's Great Lakes clear waters, your four-legged friend is most likely twice as excited. Here are recommendations of the best beaches with pet-friendly shorelines to explore and enjoy this summer.

Warren Dunes State Park - Sawyer

Warren Dunes State Park offers three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, six miles of hiking trails and a huge dune to play on as well. Dogs are allowed north of the third beach parking lot which is north of the northernmost swim buoy. Here you'll find 2.5 miles of pet-friendly shoreline. Along with the amazing shoreline, you'll find a rugged dune formation that offers spectacular views and is excellent for hang gliding. If you aren't into hang gliding, watching this activity is also something fun to do.

Mill Pond Park - Saline

Mill Pond Park is the largest of Saline’s county parks. Their one-acre dog park with water access is a popular spot for enjoying warm weather with your furry friend. Miles of nature trails options are also available.

Grand Mere State Park - Stevensville

Beautiful sand dunes and a mile of shoreline along Lake Michigan offer the perfect sport for enjoying a nice summer day. The best part is that the entire shoreline is pet-friendly. Over 1 mile of Lake Michigan beach here is available for sunbathing, swimming and playing with your pet. Three inland lakes lie behind the dunes in the undeveloped natural area where dogs are permitted. The hike to the beach is a moderately long hike but results in a secluded beach where you and your dog can enjoy.

Belle Isle Dog Beach - Detroit

Right on the Detroit River, Belle Isle Park is the perfect escape from the city hustle and bustle of downtown Detroit. The park is pet-friendly and a section of the beach is pet-friendly beach as well. You can even rent kayaks and other watercraft at the nearby Flynn Pavilion, but the best way to enjoy this beautiful, open space is to simply relax and go exploring with your furry friend. Down several paths of the hiking trails, you'll find other beach areas to enjoy as well along with swimming, sunbathing and even fishing.

Hagar Beach - Coloma

Hagar Beach is found by following a set of wooden stairs down to a popular dog-friendly shoreline along Lake Michigan. Public beach with miles of Lake Michigan shoreline walking access is available for you and your pet. The water is shallower with a gentler slope away from Hagar beach than many Lake Michigan beaches making this the perfect location for your pet to walk right into the lake. Enjoy Lake Michigan's crisp waters and go for a walk along the coast, just make sure to keep your furry-pal on a leash.
