BY's Recipe: Akara (Beans Ball) is a popular Nigerian breakfast. It is simple to prepare and requires no cooking experience. Children under ten need adult supervision. Akara can work as breakfast or snacks for vegetarians and kids.

Servings:12. Prep. Time:10-15 minutes. Cook Time: 25-30 minutes. Total Cooking Time: 35-45. minutes.

What you need

  • Stove, microwave, or oven,
  • 35-45 minutes,
  • Kitchen blender.

Required Ingredients

  • 2 cups of bean flour (available in African or Asian supermarkets),
  • 1/4 cup of water.

Optional Ingredients

  • Chopped onion,
  • Oil,
  • Salt or sugar to taste,
  • Any spices of your choice.

Directions

Step 1.

  • Use a kitchen blender or a large bowl,
  • Add bean flour and water,
  • Blend until you see many bubbles.

Step 2.

  • Preheat the frypan for a few seconds,
  • Add two or three cups of oil,
  • Heat the oil for a few seconds,
  • Add the bean mixture in small portions (see the photo below),
  • After a few minutes, flip them over.

Step 3.

  • Lower the heat and cook until they turn yellow or brown,
  • Your meal is ready (see the photo above),
  • Serve with soda, coffee, or water.

Oven

  1. The oven works best for vegans,
  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees,
  3. Follow step one above,
  4. Prepare a baking pan,
  5. Add the mixture,
  6. Bake for about 20-30 minutes,
  7. Serve with vegetables.

Microwave

  1. Follow step one above,
  2. Use microwave friendly bowl,
  3. Add the bean mixture and bake for about 15 minutes,
  4. Serve with salad.

Cooking is an art.
