Rita’s story.
“I’m a nursing student and work in a nail salon to help pay some of my bills. I chose a nail salon because one of my roommates recommended it. The owner had been hiring nursing students for a long time. I liked the nail salon because it’s less stressful and better than working in a nursing home or daycare center.
The tips for the last three months are a quarter of what I got when I started. But, of course, many will tip less; some will tip the recommended ten or twenty percent, and others only $1. Men will tip more than women. Black people will give less, and some do not tip.
The salon is in the middle to the high-income area, and most customers are well-educated and have a good income. I’m so angry many of these people have no courtesy of tipping after helping them look nice.”
Tipping can be a choice and a reward for good service.
Unfortunately, Rita got frustrated because her customers kept tipping her less than the industry expectations.
Is Rita entitled to a generous tip? Why are Black people and women not tipping Rita the recommendation percentage? How does she know her customers are well-educated with a high income?
What about Rita, her customers, and tipping?
- Tipping can be a choice and a reward for good service.
- Rita’s customers may be people with high standards and self-respect.
- Rita may be selective in providing excellent service to her customers. She may treat her customers differently, as many humans do.
- Rita and her customers may struggle with unconscious biases—sexism, racism, colorism, and classism.
Are customers always right in the service industry?
Yes, in the service industry. Customers keep you in business and make you profit or tips. It is often easy to please customers and gain more money from them. Unfortunately, Rita may think tipping is an entitlement, and she can get it from everyone with a lousy job and pride.
It is a no in 2023. People are smart with the internet in their palms. Today, people are more enlightened and have many choices. They can take their money somewhere for better service and a positive attitude.
What do nasty or kind customers want?
- Respect,
- Recognition,
- Top-notch service.
What do service people want?
- Respect,
- Profit or tips,
- More customers.
If you are a service person and miss the first one when dealing with self-confident Black people and women, you are not entitled to a generous tip. Many will tip you but below your expectation.
As always, bad service means a bad tip. However, your consistently good service with your customers is a reward for a generous tip, add-on services, and recommendations.
