"We weighed, measured and released the largest alligator gar ever caught with rod and reel — and did it on a 6-lb. line — quite the accomplishment for both angler and guide," Kirk Kirkland wrote in a Facebook post.

Kentucky fisherman Art Weston may have just landed one of the biggest catches of his life – a massive 283-pound alligator gar. The remarkable catch was made on September 2 in the Sam Rayburn Reservoir in southeast Texas, and it's now under review by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) for potentially breaking two records.

Weston, who has an impressive history of 56 IGFA records, teamed up with renowned gar fishing expert Captain Kirk Kirkland for this extraordinary fishing adventure. The fish was caught using a 6-pound fishing line, making the feat even more astonishing.

The IGFA is examining this colossal catch for two potential records. First, it could shatter the current All-Tackle world record for alligator gar, which stands at 279 pounds, set back in 1951, set by Bill Valverde.

This enormous fish, measuring over 8 feet in length and 4 feet in girth, might also establish a new record for the largest gar caught with a 6-pound test line.

Weston admitted they weren't targeting an All-Tackle record with their 6-pound setup. He described the awe he felt when the massive gar appeared beside their boat, exclaiming, "Oh my God, that's a monster!"

Captain Kirkland also expressed his excitement, calling it "the culmination of my guiding career." It took nearly three hours to reel in the weary alligator gar, and by the end, both angler and guide were astounded by the massive catch.

Closing Thoughts

Located in southeast Texas, Sam Rayburn Reservoir is known for being home to large alligator gar and distinctive freshwater fish with an appearance reminiscent of American alligators. After weighing the fish, they released it back into the reservoir.

Weston is already making plans for his next fishing adventure, considering the possibility of breaking records for musky in Wisconsin in 2024. This remarkable catch is a testament to the thrill of angling and the immense potential of the sport to produce record-breaking moments.
