A playful prankster leaves dolls and other surprises in a custom mailbox, sparking a community-wide game of creativity and fun.
Don Powell, a resident of Michigan, discovered something unusual in his custom-made mailbox when he went to collect his unwanted supermarket papers and publicity.
He found two wooden dolls sitting on a miniature couch with a note that read, "We've decided to live here. Mary and Shelley."
At first, he thought it was a mistake, but after interrogating his neighbors, he found out that a mysterious trickster had placed the dolls there.
Powell, a psychologist by training and president of a company that organizes corporate wellness retreats, decided to leave the dolls in the mailbox and see what would happen next. To his surprise, the trickster returned and added more decorations to the mailbox, such as a dog, a rug, and a four-poster bed for Mary and Shelley.
Powell was delighted by the game and posted about it on Nextdoor, a social network for local communities. The response from the neighbors was overwhelming, and everyone was excited about the game.
The mailbox became a source of fun and entertainment for the neighborhood, and the trickster continued adding more decorations.
During Halloween, the dolls were replaced with skeletons wearing black robes, and by Christmas, Mary and Shelley's Cousin Shirley, with a broken leg, had moved into the mailbox's hall, decked with presents and a tree.
Closing Thoughts
Powell's mailbox became a community attraction, and the story has inspired him to write a children's book.
This heartwarming and playful story is a reminder that sometimes the simplest things can bring joy and excitement to our lives and that a sense of community and playfulness can bring people together.
