New York's Catskill Animal Sanctuary ensures that farm animals live full and happy lives

B.R. Shenoy

"I choose to believe in humanity's goodness and in our capacity to be our best selves. It's the only way I can do this work.“ —Kathy Stevens, the Founder of Catskills Animal Sanctuary on its website

Kathy Stevens followed her heart two decades ago, leaving behind a career in education to establish an animal sanctuary.

Her mission was straightforward: to spark social change to end animal exploitation and promote vegan living while also providing a haven for any animal in need.

She co-founded Catskill Animal Sanctuary in New York's Hudson Valley. The 150-acre sanctuary combines her love of teaching, her belief that education has the power to transform, and her love of animals.

An Educational Animal Sanctuary

Catskill, one of the world's leading sanctuaries for farmed animals, has directly rescued 11 different species of over 5,000 farm animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment since its inception in 2001.

Chickens, horses, sheep, goats, cows, and pigs live in the sanctuary. While Stevens isn't teaching in a classroom, she is educating people at the sanctuary, whether members of the public on weekend tours or children who visit the farm virtually.

Stevens and her staff have also started a pilot program to assist people who need help caring for farm animals at home and guiding people who want to become vegan.

Closing Thoughts

The animal sanctuary is open to the general public on weekends between April and October. These tours do not require reservations and last about 90 minutes. The Homestead is also a pre-Civil War home where guests can stay overnight and enjoy a seasonal vegan breakfast.

If you are fond of animals, you can help support them by visiting wildlife sanctuaries that focus on education and conservation.
