On Tuesday, March 15, the AKC announced its annual list of the most popular dog breeds during a virtual news conference at The AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City.

The Labrador retriever grabbed the top place for 2021, marking the adorable canine's 31st straight year at the top of the list.

“With their loving, outgoing personality and eager-to-please attitude, it's no surprise that the Lab has been able to continue its record-breaking run as the most popular breed in the U.S. As always, we encourage people to do their research to make sure they are not just getting a purebred dog, but most importantly a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder," Gina DiNardo, an executive secretary with the AKC, said in AKC's release announcing 2021's top dogs.

According to the AKC, Labs' temperament and versatility are two characteristics that help them maintain their popularity among American households.

According to The Associated Press, the American Kennel Club announces its rankings based on the more than 800,000 purebred pups and dogs entered to the group's registration in the previous year.

There are a total of 197 recognized breeds of all sizes, shapes, and colors on the AKC’s breed registry.

Only dogs who come from a long history of purebred dogs are eligible for AKC registration. In other words, the dog, the dog’s parents, and the dog’s ancestors must all be purebred dogs.

Breeding two purebred dogs of different breeds result in a crossbred dog. Therefore, doodle dogs, for example, cannot be AKC recognized.

Here are the top ten breeds based on AKC registration statistics for 2021:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. French Bulldog
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. German Shepherd
  5. Poodle
  6. Bulldog
  7. Beagle
  8. Rottweiler
  9. German Shorthaired Pointer
  10. Dachshund
