There is nothing quite like summer in Michigan, and outdoor activities are abundant. If you are visiting Gratiot county, you must take the time to go to Lumberjacks and Rivermen’s Park just a short drive northwest of Alma. This fantastic park offers a view into the world of lumberjacks.

About Lumberjacks And Rivermen’s Park

Lumberjacks and Rivermen’s Park was founded in 1926 when George Beck found out that the last area of white pines was set to be cut down. He called upon his lumberjack friends and bought these 40 acres to preserve these fantastic pines. In the park today, you will find a cook shanty and bunk, as well as a caretaker’s house. There is a beautiful nature trail to explore as well as a playground and a bandshell. The park provides you with some history of lumberjacks and rivermen and also a gorgeous forest to explore.

Exploring the beautiful woodsy park with a small river is a perfect summer thing to do in Michigan! Bring your ball glove and play a game of baseball, catch crawdads or kayak on the small river, or just enjoy a picnic lunch in this quiet and serene setting in mid-Michigan.

Many people rent the use of the pavilions and bandshell for concerts, family reunions, weddings, and group gatherings. Rustic camping is also available for a small fee.

More Outdoor Things To Do In Alma

Fred Meijer Heartland Trail

Just south of Lumberjacks and Rivermen’s Park, the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail connects the small town of Riverdale with nearby Alma. This paved trail extends as far west as Greenville, and if outdoor adventures are on your Michigan summer bucket list, it’s a great way to explore mid-Michigan on foot or two (non-motorized) wheels! In fact, Terry’s Cycle in Alma can get you hooked up with a quality bike before you hit the trail!

Alma Mountain Bike Trail

If you are ready for some non-paved biking adventures, grab your bike and head to the Alma Mountain Bike Trail in Conservation Park. This fantastic single-track biking path offers four miles of awesome multi-directional fun. There are six sections of the trail; the first three sections can be their own loop. The fourth, fifth, and sixth sections have to be ridden together.

Best Places To Eat

Of course, when you are visiting Gratiot county, you will want to eat some great food. The good news is that there are some fabulous restaurants in the area for you to get a great meal.

In Riverdale, you can’t go wrong when you grab a bite to eat at Riverdale Tavern. A step back in time, the original bar room was built in 1917, and the walls are covered with memorabilia from years gone by. Tacos, fish, burgers, and more – the convenient location near the Heartland Trail makes it a favorite stopping point to get refueled for the rest of the ride!

For a great burger, go to Alma’s Main Cafe. Made from scratch breakfasts, soups, sandwiches, and more – they feature locally sourced and high-quality ingredients in each of their menu offerings. The patty melt is absolutely delicious, as is the rest of the food found on their menu. This is an excellent stop for a tasty breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The prices are great, and the serving sizes do not disappoint.
