Local South Carolina Doctor and Family Killed in Mass Shooting

The state of South Carolina and parts of North Carolina is now on high alert. The police have been on a manhunt for a suspect in a mass shooting in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Although a suspect has been found after hours of searching for the mass shooting attacker in South Carolina, the police are not certain there was only one suspect involved. The shooting on Wednesday evening left five dead. This includes two young children and a very prominent doctor all dead per the authorities.  

The York County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was found in a nearby home around 1:00 AM this morning. Details on the suspect's apprehension have not been identified yet, nor had the suspect’s medical condition. This area of this crime was Rock Hill, which is one of the northernmost regions of South Carolina. It is an extremely popular suburb of those that work in the Queen City, Charlotte, NC.

Those who know the deceased are extremely surprised at the death of this prominent resident of Rock Hill. The York County coroner’s office said Dr. Robert Lesslie, 70, and his wife, Barbara Lesslie, 69, were pronounced dead at the scene along with their grandchildren Adah Lesslie, 9, and Noah Lesslie, 5.

There was another victim outside of the family. This fifth victim was named James Lewis. This 38 year old victim was from Gaston and was found outside of the home dead.  Authorities said that Mr. Lewis had recently been working at the home on an undisclosed project. 

There was also a sixth victim who is now in the hospital getting care for their wounds. York County Sheriff’s Office's spokesperson Trent Faris said  this sixth person is now hospitalized with “serious gunshot wounds." Their current condition is unknown and police are waiting to talk to him. 

Local deputies were called to the home at 4:45 p.m. The home is in the Rock Hill, South Carolina area. This is an extremely popular suburb of Charlotte, NC near the theme park Carowinds. 

“We are shocked that this type of incident happened here,” Faris said. “It doesn’t happen here. It’s one of those strange things that a lot of people are going to have a hard time understanding and we just hope that everybody understands that we’re going to do everything we can to try to figure out why this happened here in Rock Hill, South Carolina.”

“I’ve lived in Rock Hill my entire life and Dr. Lesslie was my doctor growing up,” Faris said. “Dr. Lesslie has been one of those people that everybody knows. He started Riverview Medical Center in Rock Hill and it’s been a staple in Rock Hill for years.”

Dr. Robert Lesslie has been practicing in Rock Hill since 1981, according to his office and their Riverview website. Per this website Dr. Robert Lesslie has been practicing medicine in Rock Hill, South Carolina since 1981. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and also trained in Greenville, SC and also trained Charlotte, NC.  Dr. Lesslie was chief resident at the Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, NC. 

Dr. Lesslie was a  board certified doctor in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Lesslie specialized in occupational medicine. He received his Master’s Degree in Public Health in 1999 from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

He was also a  certified Medical Review Officer for drug and alcohol testing and a Certified Medical Examiner for the Department of Transportation. 

His hobbies included many years of writing for newspapers and magazine columns. His articles were  human interest type stories. His multiple books are available on Amazon. One title is called Angels on Call. Most titles include the word Angels. 

Dr. Lesslie was also a dog lover. He and his wife Barbara lived with their Golden Retriever named Moses. They also had many miniature horses, goats, donkeys, and chickens.  They were also beekeepers.

Dr. Lewis was a family man and had four children and had eight grandchildren. 

His other hobbies included golfing, traveling and a Scottish tradition of bagpiping. As a regular churchgoing he was active in his church. He wrote as a regular columnist for YC magazine. He also wrote a  series of books that offered hope and wisdom. His goal was always to raise the health and wellbeing of those he came into contact with during his years of work and community service. 

The suspect is said to live on the same road as the family. Motive is still unknown. The investigation is still ongoing.
