South Carolina’s Tiny Home Community

The Midlands welcomes West Oaks Village in the West Columbia area. This tiny home  neighborhood that will have eight tiny homes when completed. It is the first true tiny home community in the area per the community’s developers.

Most tiny home dwellers are super excited to be there. One new resident said he and his wife recently retired. They will be moving into a 400 square foot home next month.

"We’ve always worked together all our life, we’ve been married for 46 years and we’ve always worked together, so living together in a small space does not bother us," Myers said.

Residents say sometimes it is rather hard downsizing especialing their clothes, but it is well worth it to be free of so many large home burdens.

The price range for this West Columbia, South Carolina tiny home community is $65,000 - $90,000. Each home is custom built and they are shipped completely ready to go. Tiny home community members can choose from either one or two bedrooms. Each of the tiny homes has a full bathroom.

Bradley Davis, General Manager of Stone Canyon Cabins and manager of the community, said the best part about tiny living is the cost efficiency.

The community says that the electric bills on these tiny homes should only be around $65 to $85 dollars. You save a lot on various items by living in these homes.

 Why Tiny Homes Evolved

The great recession of 2007 is said to be the biggest kickstart to the tiny home craze and tiny home movement. The first were seen in the Arizona area near an RV park.

Savings were not the only factor in moving the tiny home craze forward. They are also very ecologically friendly. If everyone lived in a tiny home community the impact on Earth’s resources would be greatly impacted. It would greatly extend and expand the use of the earth’s resources for our future generations.

TIny Home Movement Perks

It is reported  by Tiny Living  that 55% of people who live in tiny houses have more savings in the bank than the average American, with a median savings of $10,972.

The tiny homes are expected to also save on home ownership monthly costs too. While the average home has a monthly cost upwards toward $500-$1,000; tiny homes usually have a monthly fee of around $450 for electricity, sewage and water each month.

Per wikipedia, the tiny house movement, is an architectural and social movement that advocates simple in home significantly smaller than the cultural norm.  There are a variety of reasons for living in a tiny house. Many people who enter this lifestyle rethink what they value in life and decide to put more effort into strengthening their communities, healing the environment, spending time with their families, or saving money. Tiny homes can also provide affordable, transitional housing for those who have experienced a lack of shelter.
