Cold Case Murder of Christopher Cummings Sees Justice: 4 Men Receive 15 Charges Each for Killing

Christopher Cummings is the murdered nephew of the late former United States Representative, Elijah Cummings. Best known for his civil rights advocacy and serving in Maryland's 7th congressional district from 1996 until his death in 2019.

His nephew, Christopher, was brutally shot to death in his off-campus apartment near Old Dominion University (ODU) in June 2011. The case went unsolved for almost ten years until now. The suspects are identified as Rahad Dooley, 28, Javon Doyle, 31, Kwaume Edwards, 32, and Ahmad Watson, 30. Pictured below from left to right.

Cummings was only 20 years-old a the time of his death and was studying law at ODU in Norfolk, Virginia.

The charges lobbied against the suspects range from homicide, first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, the Norfolk police department said in a press release statement.
The horrifying crime took place on June 10, 2011, when police were called to the 800 block of W 42nd Street of Norfolk, Virginia, after reports of two gunshot victims.
The younger Cummings was one of the two victims while the other was purported to be his roommate. Police report that the vacancy appeared to be burglarized. Cummings’ roommate was transported to the hospital and survived the ordeal while Cummings succumbed to his fatal injuries.
"For more than a decade now Investigators have been relentless in their efforts to solve this case, they have followed up on every lead necessary to ensure the Norfolk Police Department was able to deliver justice to both the surviving victim and to the Cummings family," Police Chief Larry D. Boone wrote in a statement.
While Christopher Cummings’ father voiced mixed emotions about the suspects being called to justice:
“While my son is lying cold in his coffin, these guys are out there running the streets, so it's good to have them off the streets," he said.
At the time, Cummings’ late Uncle, US Rep, Elijah Cummings, issued a plea with the public to find the people committed the crime: "I'm begging you. If you know what happened in this case — if you know anything about it — come to police and tell them what you know."
