NEW ORLEANS, LA - The New Orleans Saints have just completed their first 2021 training camp practice on Thursday, July 29. Here are some takeaways from the first pre-season training for the Saints.
First, the Saints haven't yet decided who will start at quarterback. In the first training camp without the retired club legend Drew Brees, Taysom Hill took snaps with the first group, while Jameis Winston took snaps with the second; Trevor Siemian and rookie Ian Book were the backups.
Nonetheless, the Saints haven't yet concluded who is going to lead the offense. Head coach Sean Payton gave his thoughts and said the evaluation process would continue, and both quarterbacks will work with different groups during the rest of training camp.
"It's all of it. We're evaluating everything we are seeing. We chart throws, we obviously understand what group they're with and all those other things. We evaluate all of it," Payton said of the process involving Winston and Hill for the prominent quarterback spot.
On the defense, cornerback Patrick Robinson already lined up with the defensive team starters. Outside linebackers Zack Baun and Kaden Elliss played alongside defensive captain Demario Davis, while Shy Tuttle partnered with David Onyemata at defensive tackle.
Regarding Davis, the veteran linebacker responded humbly when asked if he'll singularly take over duties as the pregame huddle point man. He shared the duty with Brees from 2019 to 2020, but he wasn't giving any signs about doing it again this season.
On the other hand, former Saints offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod, who played for New Orleans from 2007 to 2012 and again in 2018, along with former cornerback Sterling Moore, who played there from 2016 to 2017, was back in the training camp. They are the Saints' coaching interns this summer, as Bushrod, a 2009 Super Bowl-winning team member, will coach offensive lineman, and Moore will coach secondary.
