While it’s been a mostly quiet spring without any live performances or award shows, the end of the summer came through. MTV was able to hold the Video Muisc Awards back in August. Obviously, there were many differences including no live audience and mask wearing, but they made it work. It was very exciting to see artists sing their songs live for the first time in a while. Here are 7 of the best pop/rock award show performances of 2020:

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande perform at the Video Music Awards

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande took the VMA’s stage to sing their dance pop hit Rain on Me. Lady Gaga also sang other songs from her 2020 dance album Chromatica. Chromatica is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album while Rain on Me is nominated for Best Pop/Duo Performance. Chromatica was Lady Gaga’s sixth number one album on the Billboard 200 Chart back in June.

Dua Lipa sings Levitating at the American Music Awards

At the 2020 American Music Awards, Dua Lipa performed Levitating at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The singer took flight to make a showstopping finish to her space themed performance. Levitating is a dance anthem featured off her second album, Future Nostalgia. Her album reached the number one spot on the Billboard Official U.K. Albums Chart back in April.

The Weeknd sings Blinding Lights at the Video Music Awards

The Weeknd took over the charts in 2020 with his chart topping hit Blinding Lights. The Weeknd got to perform the hit single on top of the Edge at Hudson Yards in New York City. Blinding Lights snagged the number one spot in April and has spent 55 weeks on the Hot 100.

Ariana Grande sings imagine and 7 rings at the Grammys

Before COVID, the 2020 Grammy Awards were able to take place as usual in January. Ariana Grande took the stage to perform imagine, 7 rings and a bit of My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music. Both imagine and 7 rings are featured on her 2019 Grammy nominated album, thank u, next. 7 rings took the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in February of 2019.

Miley Cyrus sings Midnight Sky at the Video Music Awards

Miley Cyrus performed Midnight Sky, her first single off her brand new rock album Plastic Hearts at this year's VMAs. With red, blue and white lights along with a disco ball, the performance did not disappoint. Plastic Hearts peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart on December 12th and is still the number one rock album (as of the week December 26th, 2020).

Doja Cat sings Say So at the MTV Europe Music Awards

To make things a little different from previous performances, Doja Cat added a funky twist to the song for the 2020 EMAs. Her number one hit Say So has over 650 million streams on Spotify. Say So Remix fearing Nicki Minaj took the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in May.

BTS sings their smash hit Dynamite at the Video Music Awards

Worldwide phenomenon BTS took over the world with their song Dynamite this fall. During their performance, they showed off their incredible singing and dancing skills. So far, the group has 3 number one hits (including Dynamite) and 6 top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is currently still in the top 10 on Billboard (as of the week of December 26th, 2020).
