Lessons on Balance from Paddling

I could hear ever so faintly in the distance, the chatter and laughter of kids playing on the playground, all the way across the lake.

Let me start out by saying that my heart is exploding with joy to finally see a woman of color, Senator Kamala Harris, as our Vice President. There was magic in the air as I watched her victory speech when she was officially the VP-Elect alongside my friends and their daughters. It was beautiful to hear my friends point out, “That’s the Vice President, girls. Women can be anything that they want to be.” Hope and feminine power are such a welcome presence after the past hellish, toxic masculinity-fueled four years.

I consider myself a Fox News orphan. Someone who watched and listened as her intelligent, compassionate father washed away into a sea of conspiracies, hateful rhetoric, and racist apologists. While not all programs on the network rely on angry, loud, white men shouting angrily about the economy, “illegals,” or any number of alt-right scapegoats, many of them do. I read the exhaustion on their faces even as they joked about how they “can’t wait to ruin Thanksgiving” as liberal young people. “Can’t wait confront Aunt Susan about her racism,” a friend said but her eyes betrayed her. Many of us are exhausted by our older relatives who are sucked into conspiracy theories and intense, divisive rhetoric.
