Organic Grocery Shakeup: Major Chain Announces Closure of 8 Stores in Florida

Ash Jurberg

Publix introduced an organic grocery store brand but is set to close seven stores in Florida.

Grocery chain Publix is phasing out its GreenWise Market stores.

First launched in 2017, they had opened eight stores in Florida under the brand offering original organic and natural foods in what seemed to be direct competition with Whole Foods.

The GreenWise markets had "amenities such as a Pours station for kombucha on tap, açai bowls, craft beer, wine and more, including coffee."

However, it seems the concept wasn't working in Florida, and now all eight stores are to be transitioned to the Publix brand.

Our customers’ shopping habits have reinforced that they enjoy the attributes of a Publix Greenwise Market location, but within their traditional Publix shopping setting...each location will transition separately based on various factors related to the project.” Maria Brous, Director of Communications, Publix

Interestingly data from show that visits to GreenWise Market in Florida were increasing.

September visits to GreenWise Market in Florida were up 6.4% year over year, while visits to Publix stores in Florida decreased by 3.9%.

No date has been given for the stores' rebrand, but I will update readers as soon as information is announced.
