A study by Placer.ai ranked the grocers with the greatest share of store visits in Idaho, with Abertsons coming in first.
What is the preferred grocery chain in Idaho?
That is the question that placer.ai wanted to answer, and so it analyzed data to see which chain ranked best.
Coming in first place was Albertsons, which accounted for 29% of grocery store visits by shoppers in Idaho. Idaho based Winco Foods was just behind in second place with 22% of store visits. Rounding out the top three was Fred Meyer, with 17% of store visits.
Given the rising food prices across the country, competition in the grocery industry is set to heat up as customers look for the best prices possible.
A look at the local option
While grocery giant Albertson's had a larger share of visits the report shows that smaller brands can still gain market share.
Winco Foods was founded in Boise in 1967 and was originally called Waremart. It changed its name in 1998 to Winco as a portmanteau of 'winning' and 'company.' It now has 139 locations across ten states and is growing in popularity- especially in the Northwest.
The report stated:
The success of WinCo Foods, the privately-held, employee-owned grocery chain with some 139 locations across 10 states – including 66 in the Northwest – shows that smaller brands can also win at the regional grocery game. Based in Boise, ID, WinCo keeps prices low by buying directly from farmers and manufacturers and providing a no-frills shopping experience: Customers can’t pay by credit card, and they have to bag their own groceries. Most locations are open 24 hours a day, and many products can be purchased in bulk. And WinCo’s low-cost strategy seems to be paying off. Since the beginning of the year, WinCo has greatly outperformed the nationwide grocery sector, with year-over-year (YoY) visits up nearly across the board, partly due to the chain’s continued expansion. While the chain doesn’t rank as the top grocery retailer for any of the analyzed states, its regional visit share stood at 10.9% in April 2023, making it the third-most-visited banner in the region.
