What is the preferred grocery chain in Washington?

That is the question that placer.ai wanted to answer, so it analyzed data to see which chain ranked best, and there was a clear favorite.

Over 33% of grocery store visits in Washington are to Safeway. This was way ahead of Fred Meyer, which had 22%, and Winco Foods which only had a 9% share.

Washington has the second-highest number of Safeway stores, with only California having more. There are 182 Safeway stores in Washington which accounts for 20% of the total number of stores they have.

Safeway also proved to be the most popular chain across the Northwest with 32.4% of grocery store visits across the Northwest.

The chain is owned by Albertson’s which is currently seeking approval for a merger with Kroger and there are worries the merger could adversely impact Washington state in particular. While on the East Coast and in the Midwest, Kroger, and Albertsons are in largely separate markets, the two retailers overlap heavily in Washington.

The Seattle Times reported, "The two merger partners would have to sell hundreds of locations in areas where they have too much market overlap. So-called divestiture could shake up the grocery landscape in Seattle and across Washington, where Kroger, which owns QFC and Fred Meyer, and Albertsons, collectively have nearly 350 locations."

If stores closed it could lead to longer lines and higher prices in Washington.
