A study by Placer.ai ranked the grocers with the greatest share of store visits in Oregon, with Fred Meyer coming in first.
What is the preferred grocery chain in Oregon?
That is the question that placer.ai wanted to answer, and so it analyzed data to see which chain ranked best.
Coming in first place was Fred Meyer, which accounted for 28% of grocery store visits by shoppers in Oregon. Safeway was just behind in second place with 27% of store visits. Rounding out the top three was Winco Foods, with 12% of store visits.
Given the rising food prices across the country, competition in the grocery industry is set to heat up as customers look for the best prices possible.
About Fred Meyer
In 1922, Fred Meyer opened the first Fred Meyer store in Portland at the corner of SW 5th & Yamhill. Before Meyer "opened his new store, Customers went to separate shops for meat, produce, cheese, and other goods. Mr. Meyer placed these all under one roof and put an expert in charge of each area, setting the stage for the Fred Meyer stores we know today – stores that average 150,000 square feet and carry more than 225,000 items."
The business expanded acquiring grocery chains in other states and in 1998 the company merged with Kroger. There are now 130 Fred Meyer branded stores across the Northwest.
