A study by Placer.ai ranked the grocers with the greatest share of store visits in Iowa, with local chain Hy-Vee dominating the results.
What is the most popular grocery chain in Iowa?
That is the question that placer.ai wanted to answer, and so it analyzed data to see which chain ranked best.
Coming in first place in the report was Hy-Vee. A whopping 65% of grocery store visits by people in Iowa were to a Hy-Vee store.
This shouldn't come as much surprise as Hy-Vee has its headquarters in West Des Moines. Hy-Vee was founded in Iowa in 1930, and the employee-owned chain of supermarkets now has over 280 locations, primarily in the Midwest.
They have become almost a one-stop shop as their stores feature beauty sections, 24-hour Chinese takeout, and in-store restaurants, including Wahlburgers, Starbucks, and Caribou Coffee.
Hy-Vee is not only popular in Iowa but throughout the Midwest. Hy-Vee also holds the top spot in Nebraska and South Dakota, while it was the second most visited grocer in Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri.
Other popular grocery store chains in Iowa were Fareway, which accounts for 17% of grocery store visits in the state, and German discount grocer Aldi which attracts 10% of store visits.
Given the rising food prices across the country, competition in the grocery industry is set to heat up as customers look for the best prices possible.
