We stumbled upon the Niche rankings while figuring out where to live to escape CA. Lucky us! The Niche rankings were right - this is paradise for folks from CA. We have lived in Nothern and Southern CA and we love calling The Woodlands home now. It's beautiful, the housing is cheap (bigger house/lot then you could ever afford in CA), the schools are great and bike/walking distance, great sport options. Strong economy, conservative govt with low taxes.
Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are here and HEB is better than your typical Ralphs or Safeway.
They're doing a good job keeping up with the growth by building infrastructure and widening roads (something that would take forever in CA).
The Woodlands is better than any other TX planned development. Trees abound, trails, ponds, fishing, pools, ponds, good city govt. It's not visually boring like other TX communities - just use Google earth to compare The Woodlands to others - you'll see the density of our trees makes a difference.
I always tell people The Woodlands is not an exciting place to live, but it is a nice place to live.
When people from the greater Houston area hear "The Woodlands," they think of The Woodlands Mall. This is the most popular part of town, and it is conveniently located close to the freeway. The adjacent Market Street is an upscale shopping center that looks prettiest at night.
Newcomers always point out the excess greenery and ask how we locals can find anything, but I have no problem with all the trees because the town is so well-organized. There are several zoning laws that ensure business and residential areas are clearly separated. There are plenty of franchise restaurants along the town's major streets.
There are local churches and well-maintained parks hidden in every neighborhood.
Are you surprised to see The Woodlands rated so highly? What do you believe is the best city to live in in the U.S.?
