Sad news for shoppers in Providence, Rhode Island, with confirmation today that the Gap store in Providence Place Mall will soon be closing.

No official date has been given for the store's closing, but there is a "Get it before it's gone—this location is closing" sign in the store's window. Gap exiting the mall follows the earlier announcement from women’s clothing store Talbots that it would depart the mall

It is another blow for the retail industry that has been hit hard of late; over the last month, more than 1400 retail stores have been listed to close, with the possibility of more to come.

Gap has been one business heavily impacted by retail industry woes advising it would close approximately 350 Gap and Banana Republic stores by the end of 2023. So far, 276 stores have been closed, leaving up to 74 store closures still to be announced.

Should any of these be listed in Rhode Island, I'll update this article and keep readers informed of any new developments in the retail industry.
