This week Forbes released a list of the 25 most generous people in the United States.
I love reading articles like these as they are positive and show the good people can do for their communities, and it is great to share positive, uplifting stories with readers.
Mackenzie Scott was ranked number four on the list as the most generous person in the nation.
Scott, the richest woman in Seattle, donated $5.82 billion last year. Over his lifetime, Buffet has given away an astounding $14.43 billion to various organizations.
While Scott may often be known as the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, she should be celebrated for her philanthropy.
The Seattle resident has a net worth of $30.3 billion, and since divorcing her husband, Mackenzie Scott has focused on philanthropy and charitable efforts. In fact, soon after her divorce, she signed the Giving Pledge, in which she promised to give away at least fifty percent of her wealth over her lifetime.
And she is certainly doing her best to achieve this.
Between July 2020 and November 2022, Scott has given away $14.4 billion to nearly 1,600 nonprofits. However, unlike other philanthropists, Scott "employs a no strings attached style of giving, wherein the nonprofits to which she donates have full control over how to best deploy the new funds."
Some of the donations have been record-breaking.
According to Forbes, "when MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $275 million to Planned Parenthood in 2022, it broke records. The gift was the largest in the organization’s history from a single donor."
Scott also gave $436 million to the homebuilding group Habitat for Humanity last March.
All of Scott's donations can be found on her website, Yield Giving, which was "established by MacKenzie Scott to share a financial fortune created through the effort of countless people; Yield is named after a belief in adding value by giving up control."
