A real estate agent based in the Southlake suburb of Dallas has been disciplined after a series of threatening texts he sent were published on Twitter and went viral.
Jeff Cornett, an agent for Coldwell Banker, sent a series of texts to Tom Powell Jr after disagreeing with him on politics on TikTok.
Cornett allegedly tracked down Powell's details online and sent him a series of threatening texts. Screenshots of the threatening and abusive texts were published on Twitter, and within hours they had gone viral, with people demanding action.
Cornett said he knew where Powell lived and sent an ominous warning to "keep an eye on your family."
Twitter users across Dallas and Texas began retweeting Powell's post and tagging Coldwell banker.
The real estate business was quick to take action issuing the following statement.
" Coldwell Banker supports a culture of dignity and respect for all. We take this matter seriously and have conducted our own internal review. The individual is no longer affiliated with the Company. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention."
Cornett was also removed from the list of agents in Southlake.
Note- this article has been updated to reflect that Powell was not a client of the agency.
Your thoughts
Do you believe that Cornett should face criminal charges for his messages? Or do you think losing his job is enough of a loss? Should there be more protection after people's details, so they aren't abused in this manner?
