The youngest billionaire in Orlando

Ash Jurberg

In the latest annual billionaires report by Forbes, there were 735 billionaires listed as living in the United States. Of these, 78 of them live in Florida.

To become a billionaire at any age is amazing, but one person has the title of being the youngest billionaire. And that amazing person happens to live in Orlando.

So let's take a look at the youngest billionaire in Orlando, who also happens to be the youngest in the entire United States.

The youngest billionaire in Orlando

The youngest billionaire in Orlando is Austin Russell. Twenty-seven-year-old Russell has a net worth of $1.7 billion.

It is fair to say that Russell was a child prodigy. He knew the entire periodic table when he was two, filed for his first patent when he was 13, and came up with the idea for his business, when he was just 17 and studying physics at Stanford University.

In 2012, when he was still 17, Rusell was awarded a $100,000 entrepreneurial fellowship and dropped out of Stanford to start an automotive sensor firm Luminar Technologies.

Luminar develops automotive lidar hardware and software technology that “uses lasers to detect and measure distance and ultimately create a 3D map of the real-world environment that can be used in self-driving.”

In 2017 Luminar set up a factory in Orlando to manufacture the automotive lidar devices.

When Luminar went public in December 2020, Russell became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at age 25.

Despite his rapid rise to success, Russell still finds time to give back to the community.

In December last year, he made a personal donation of $70 million in stock to create a charitable fund in Central Florida. His gift doubled the amount of funds held by the Central Florida Foundation.

“This may be the biggest gift ever made in Orlando. The reality is, this opens the door to do some really amazing things here” Mark Brewer, president and CEO of the Central Florida Foundation

There are a lot of stories written about billionaires, but there are few as inspirational as Orlando resident Austin Russell. From his astounding success to his generosity to the Central Florida Foundation.

Readers, what do you think of Austin Russell and his rise to fame?
