I write a lot about billionaires, CEOs, and successful entrepreneurs.
These people have vast fortunes. But when I write about the success of these people, readers always ask me the same question:
What do these people do to help the rest of the community?
It's an important question, and so I thought I would at the top donors in each city. The person or couple who gives the most away to charity.
And what better place to start than New York.
The New York couple that donates the most
Each year the Philanthropy 50 is published, which lists the person that donates the most in each state. This year, the New York couple that are the biggest donors are husband and wife William Ackman and Neri Oxman.
Ackman is the founder of the New York hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management and has a net worth of $3.2 billion. He married Oxman, a professor in MIT's Media Lab, in 2019.
The couple provides charitable donations through their Pershing Square Foundation, which has committed $400 million to causes like the Innocence Project, Human Rights Watch, and Teach For America.
In 2021 they made a few large donations. These included:
- $20.5 million to the Mount Sinai Health System to back low-cost saliva-based Covid-19 tests for students and staff at New York schools.
- $7.5 million to TheDream.US, a college-access program for immigrant youths who came to the United States as children without documentation
- $2 million to Recidiviz, a technology nonprofit that works with state criminal-justice agencies
Last year the couple committed given $1.2 billion to various causes. This ranks them fourth on the Philanthropy 50 list, behind only Bill and Melinda Gates, Elon Musk, and Michael Bloomberg.
Readers, were you aware of the philanthropic efforts of Ackman and Oxman? Have you met either of them or worked for an organization that has benefitted from their donations?
