"This is not about running against someone. It’s about running for something” Allen West
On July 4, exactly one month as he quit as the head of the Texas GOP, Allen West announced he was running for Governor of Texas. He joins Don Huffines – a Dallas real estate developer and former state senator, and Blaze TV host Chad Prather to declare they would run against Greg Abbott. Abbott is seeking a third term as Texas governor.
West made the announcement in Carrolton, Texas, accompanied by the campaign video below.
There have been rumors of high profile candidates, including Matthew McConaughey and Beto O'Rourke, running for Governor, but in the meantime, a lot of people are asking- just who is Allen West?
The Allen West bio
Allen West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in the same neighborhood where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr preached. He had a distinguished military career serving from 1982 to 2004.
Allen West is a retired Army officer who was elected to Congress from Florida in 2010 as part of the national Tea Party. However, his career in Congress was short-lived as he was narrowly defeated for reelection in 2012. His campaign spent over $17 million, and he was accused of being an Islamaphobe at the time.
He considered challenging fellow Republican Marco Rubio in 2016 but decided against it.
West moved to Texas in 2014, and he was elected chair of the Texas GOP in 2020.
Can Allen West actually beat Abbott?
Even as head of the GOP, West hasn't been afraid to take on Abbott. Last October, he participated in 'Free Texas protest at Abbott's mansion. He called upon Abbott to end COVID restrictions in place across Texas at the time.
"We call upon the governor to do what is right by the people of the great state of Texas so that Texas can continue to be a leader." Allen West
He has also criticized Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick; last year, he accused Patrick of undermining efforts to expand the right to carry handguns. In addition, he accused many Republican party members of being insufficiently conservative.
West does enjoy a strong tea party following but critically lacks support from Donald Trump. The former President has already endorsed Abbott.
"Greg Abbott is a fighter and a great governor for the incredible people of Texas. No governor has done more to secure the border and keep our communities safe than Governor Abbott." Donald Trump
West wasn't fazed by that endorsement.
“I don’t serve President Trump. I serve God, country and Texas, so that does not affect me whatsoever.”Allen West
Abbott has already raised a campaign war chest of $40 million which adds yet another obstacle for any challenger in the election. West will have a hard time trying to match those donations.
A recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University poll of registered voters found that Allen West had only a 25% favorable rating, almost half that of Abbott and well below McConaughey and O'Rourke, who are yet even to nominate. This may not be a good sign for West.
- Greg Abbott: 49 percent favorable rating
- Matthew McConaughey: 42 percent favorable rating
- Beto O'Rourke: 34 percent favorable rating
- Ken Paxton: 29 percent favorable rating
- George P. Bush: 26 percent favorable rating
- Allen West: 25 percent favorable rating
