The San Antonio Spurs are known for their players being tight. They bond on road trips, and they hang out together when home in San Antonio.

It's getting out in a different city, hanging out with the guys and getting away from basketball and just talking about family stuff, joking around, all while coffee's at the center," Drew Eubanks, San Antonio Spurs basketballer and current Coffee Gang member

Out of this was born the San Antonio Spurs Coffee Gang. Originally started by San Antonio's favorite Patty Mills, who loves his coffee- the Coffee Gang comprises Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw, and Tiago Splitter. Whether in San Antonio or traveling across the USA, the four would meet up for coffee and often post photos to their social media.

During 2020, when the NBA season was in hiatus, and we were all in lockdown, the Coffee Gang would meet over Zoom.

The Coffee Gang grew in popularity to such an extent that the San Antonio Spurs decided to release the official San Antonio Coffee Gang merchandise range this week. The 12-piece collection includes a variety of lifestyle gear and novelty items, such as hats, shirts, vinyl stickers, and insulated mugs.

Jordan Mandelkorn, the team's director of marketing said, "We were trying to do something that we felt was true to the team culture and gave fans the opportunity to be part of that bonding experience."

The marketing team ran the idea by Patty Mills, the heart and soul of the San Antonio Spurs, to get his input. "We wanted to make sure that this is something the team was excited about and felt was true to what they created," said Mandelkorn.

Now, the two things I love most in life are coffee and the San Antonio Spurs (don't tell my wife and kids that!). So I was as excited as anyone to see this.

I spoke to fellow Spurs fans on chat rooms and forums, and there were many other excited people. This was obviously going to be hot property. The official release was to be at 730pm on April 1, just as tip-off between San Antonio and the Atlanta Hawks was commencing.

At 7.30 pm, I got the email from the Spurs saying the merchandise was live. It was go time!

Unfortunately, it seems that most of San Antonio was online trying to get this merch as within three minutes, all bar the caps and mugs were gone. And the Coffee Gang t-shirt I was looking to wear with pride every time I went out for coffee in San Antonio was out of my reach.

I went back to the forums and saw a mixture of happiness from those new coffee gang members alongside the disappointment of those like me who just missed out.

It just goes to show there are a lot of people in San Antonio who love the Spurs and coffee as much as I do.
