Gaming consoles have been around since the 1970s with companies like Atari, and they evolved into handheld games and even mobile devices. Many companies have fallen victim to new technologies like Blackberry, and the gaming community isn't any different. When Blackberry watched the rise of the iPhone, they didn't take it seriously, and the iPhone made the Blackberry obsolete and sent it into extinction. Many believe that Cloud Gaming will eventually get rid of gaming consoles.

The Rising Popularity of Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming is growing, but it's mostly an added service. What exactly is Cloud Gaming? Cloud Gaming is the ability to play games on whatever device you own. Whether you are playing on a console or PC, they want you to play the game. You can now connect your game controller via Bluetooth to your phone, and your mobile device will act as a console. The goal for companies isn't to rid the world of consoles, but with news choices, the gaming community might skip the console in the future.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

The increasing interest in VR headsets can also take a toll on consoles. The Oculus 2 headset reached almost 2 million sales in 2021 and reportedly shipped 10 million units. These headsets put you inside the game, and people are going viral on social media using them. People that were never into gaming are enjoying the VR experience. We have only gotten a small taste of what VR technology can do, and it will only improve. Augmented Reality gaming is still up and coming, but being able to put on glasses and put a screen anywhere you want is here. What's the difference between AR and VR? AR gaming involves real-world experience, and VR is entirely a virtual experience.

With all of these new technologies, you can see why the future of gaming consoles is gloomy. I prefer the VR gaming experience and the convenience of Cloud Gaming, and I will not be purchasing a gaming console any time soon.
