(NEW YORK) Happy Friday, fellow New Yorkers! We've made it to the end of the week and it's almost time to celebrate! Today is Feb. 25, and it is the last Friday of the month!

After the overnight storm, today's weather will peak at 44°F, with sunset scheduled for 5:42 p.m. Look out for sunny but brisk conditions on Saturday and Sunday!

As for the news, here's what you need to know heading into the weekend:

1.) Schools to forego outdoor mask mandate

Students, faculty and all staff can go without masks in outdoor settings at New York City public schools beginning on Monday, according to ABC 7 NY.

The announcement comes from Mayor Eric Adams ahead of a CDC announcement regarding indoor mask guidelines.

"I want to commend New Yorkers," he said. "They have done an amazing job. Those who were vaccinated, our numbers are leading the entire nation. Our ability to keep the schools open, able to give the safety feeling people needed to go back into restaurants and the theaters...we are at a good place. We did an amazing job. Now, we are going to start easing up on some of the mandates."

2.) New York Rangers win over Washington Capitals at MSG

The New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals by a score of 4-1 on Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Alexis Lafrenière and Mika Zibanejad each tallied a goal and an assist to push the Rangers to victory.

“We played good from start to finish,” Lafrenière said. “It was a really good game against a really good team. ... They're having a really good year, too, so it was a good test for us and we responded like that."

“It was a real good team effort,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “Real good goaltending. It's a shame he lost that shutout at the end but (we) had a good strong team game.”

The Rangers will return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.

3.) City Council votes to keep outdoor dining structures

Although the temperatures are not yet what New Yorkers may want to consider outdoor dining, the good news is the outdoor structures are not going anywhere.

The City Council voted 43 to 6 in favor of keeping the outdoor dining settings, with new guidelines soon to follow, per ABC 7 NY.
