In an article in The Sun, a guest on the Antiques Roadshow brings in a sheet of stamps, and viewers are gobsmacked when they discover just how much the stamps are worth.
It becomes the rarest Royal item ever seen on the show.
According to The Sun, a recent episode of the Antiques Roadshow focused on the valuation of royal items to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.
One of the items was a sheet of stamps with Queen Victoria's (1819 - 1901) face on them.
The sheet of black and white stamps was very intact with just a few stamps cut off.
The expert was stunned as she declared,
"This could actually be one of the most valuable things we've ever had on the Antiques Roadshow - certainly one of the rarest."
She asked the guest how he came across the sheet of stamps.
While he did not reveal how he obtained the stamps, he stated that the stamps were Penny Black which was introduced in the UK as a method of prepayment postage in the 1840s. It introduced a flat rate of postage. Before that, the recipient would have to pay the postage fees.
Penny Black stamps featured a profile of Queen Victoria's face.
In 2021, the earliest example of a Penny Black sold for $8.25 million.
The guest on the Antiques Roadshow had a whole sheet of stamps. Although it might not have been the earliest example of a Penny Black, each stamp on the sheet was worth up to $3,700 due to its mint condition.
Altogether, the sheet was worth millions.
The expert stated,
"There has never been a full sheet like this which has come up on the market,"
"I mean, it's never going to come up but if it is ever to come up it's worth what someone would pay for it, but really, this is [worth] multiples of millions."
