Tragedy struck a Ukrainian refugee who was working as a trucker in the US.
The father of two, Yurii Vakhniak, had fled the war in Ukraine with his family and was settled in the US.
The New York Post reports that Yurii was killed by an alleged drunk driver on March 13, 2023, in North Carolina.
Yurii had found a job as a car hauler. He drove a 3-car hauler and would pick up cars for transportation.
On March 13, Yurii was loading the last car he had picked up from Frontline Motors, North Carolina. He was planning to take the haul to Tennessee. Instead, he was killed and struck by a drunk driver.
The 26-year-old drunk driver was reported to be a repeat offender and he was charged with felony death by vehicle.
The driver was driving with a revoked license and had been charged three times with driving while intoxicated.
Yurii who was only 40 years old was said to be hardworking and optimistic that he could make it in his new country. He left behind his wife and two children.
For his friends and family, Yurii's American dream is now unfinished. His wife and children relied on him and now they are without a father and husband.
A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been set up for Yurii's family to pay for his funeral expenses and any support the family may need in the future.
Yurii's family would like to take his body back to Ukraine to be buried there.
