An article on the website Honey Travel reveals that there is a secret feature on an aircraft that could help save lives during an emergency.

The secret feature was shared by Swiss Airlines on TikTok.

Swiss Airlines is the official flag carrier airline of Switzerland. It operates scheduled flights to five major continents.

In the TikTok video, Swiss Airlines shows a tray table in a normal row of seats. The latch on the tray table can be moved clockwise and anticlockwise.

However, in the emergency exit row, the latch on the tray table can only be moved in one way or direction. Thus, the opening of the tray table is only possible in one direction.

The reason for this is that in the event of an emergency, the tray table will be prevented from opening and blocking the exit as people rush by.

Most people watching the Swiss Airlines TikTok video had no idea that this was a feature of the emergency exit row.

And it's not just about the exit row seats. During an emergency, all tray tables even those attached to regular seats have to be locked in place and the seats have to be positioned up from a recline. This is to ensure that the path is not blocked so passengers can easily escape.

This is one reason why tray tables have to be in their locked position and seats up during take-off and landing of an aircraft.

Airlines usually require a qualified adult to sit in the exit row seating. Passengers in exit row seats should at least be 15 and physically capable of performing emergency actions.
