The only American to get directly hit by a falling meteorite suffered a huge bruise and then used it as a doorstop

Only one person has been documented in history to have been hit by a falling meteorite and that person was Ann Hodges of Alabama.

On November 30, 1954, a 34-year-old woman, Ann, was struck by a falling meteorite that broke through the roof of her house, banged against furniture, and then bounced against her body. Ann received a large bruise on her thigh where the meteorite struck her.

The meteorite that hit Ann was 8.5 pounds and 4.5 billion years old. It came to be known as the Sylacauga meteorite because it fell near the city of Sylacauga in Alabama.

When the meteorite was falling, witnesses saw a fireball streak through the sky. They also heard loud explosive sounds.

Ann became the center of attention and a minor celebrity after the meteorite hit her. However, her troubles were not over. She tried to claim ownership of the meteorite but the owner of the house stated that it was rightfully hers as it had fallen on her house.

Ann eventually settled with the owner for a sum of money. The meteorite was in Ann's possession for a number of years. She tried to sell it but there were no takers as interest had dwindled down. The meteorite was even used as a doorstop for a while.

Ann ended up donating the meteorite to the Alabama Museum of Natural History. Sadly, she died young at the age of 52 of health problems.

There have been reports of other people having been hit by meteorites and surviving but Ann's case remains the only verified report of a human being hit by a meteorite.
