It might seem gross but insects can be a food source not just for animals but for humans as well.
In fact, insects are already a part of our diets although we might not be aware of it. Food products may very well contain insect parts. For example, generic or even brand name peanut butter is known to contain 60 insect fragments per 100 grams. Even chocolate and canned foods contain insect parts although you might need a microscope to see them.
In some parts of the world, insects are intentionally cooked and eaten. Some of these edible insects are even found in Kentucky.
Here are 3 kinds of edible insects found in Kentucky:
Cicadas
Brood X Cicadas were pretty much found everywhere in Kentucky in the summer of 2021. They are safe to eat and can either be cooked or eaten straight up. Young cicadas are especially best for eating as their bodies have not hardened.
Cicadas are a good source of protein but they should be avoided if you have a seafood allergy.
Cicadas are also a source of free food that you don't have to buy in the store.
Cicadas are reported to have a shrimp-like taste.
Crickets
Crickets are the most commonly encountered insects in Kentucky. They have been used as bait and food for pets. However, crickets are also edible and some people love the taste of dry-roasted crickets.
According to an article in Healthline, edible crickets have a higher protein content than animal sources such as goats, pork, and chicken.
Carpenter Ants
There are several varieties of ants that can be eaten and carpenter ants are one of them. Carpenter ants are one of the most common ants found in Kentucky.
Ants should be killed first before being eaten but they are supposed to be a good source of protein, calcium, and iron.
What do you think of these edible insects and would you consider eating them?
