A former limestone mine in Louisville, Kentucky has been converted into a subterranean attraction for tourists and visitors. It is now called the Louisville Mega Cavern.
The 100-acre limestone cavern is hidden underneath Louisville and measures more than 4 million square feet.
The cavern has support structures and has been classified by the Metro Louisville Government and the State of Kentucky as a building. It is the largest building in Kentucky and has its own building code.
The origin of the mine dates back to the 1930s when it was founded by Ralph Rogers. At the time, it was called the Louisville Crushed Stone Quarry. The quarry was run from the 1930s to the 1970s. Later after it shut down, the city of Louisville purchased the quarry.
The Mega Cavern is so large that it can hold up to 50,000 people. The cavern now holds storage units for bulk warehousing needs. It also holds an events center and serves as a tourist attraction. It is reportedly the world's largest underground bike park and entertainment center.
In addition, the Mega Cavern has the world's only underground zip line course.
Important events and celebrations in Louisville are held at the Mega Center. One event is Lights Under Louisville which is a holiday event that features themed displays and 4 million points of light.
The Louisville Mega Cavern has been ranked #4 of Best Things to Do in Louisville by the U.S. News and World Report.
The Mega Cavern is truly a unique attraction in Kentucky.
