For a little taste of Paris in Cincinnati, think macarons!
A macaron is a sweet meringue-based dessert that is made from egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond flour, and food coloring. Macarons are so colorful and come in every flavor under the sun. They are like soft cookies with fillings but just so much better than regular cookies (in my opinion).
The first time that I had heard about this delectable treat was when I was reading about Ladurée which is a famous French luxury bakery. Ladurée is most known for its macarons. Anyone who is into French luxury would know about macarons.
I had also seen macarons in Instagram pictures of celebrities and YouTube influencers. However, macarons did not become popular in the United States until the 2010s.
So, imagine my surprise and delight upon finding out that Cincinnati had its very own Macaron Bar.
Macaron Bar - Background
The Macaron Bar was founded in Cincinnati in 2014. The bakery exclusively makes macarons and hosts macaron baking classes. Their macarons are supposed to be the very best in Cincinnati. The Macaron Bar is now located in 5 different cities across the midwest. The other cities are Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Pittsburgh.
Here is what the Macaron Bar says about their macarons,
All of our macarons are gluten-free and are made with premium ingredients to ensure a consistent, high quality, and we often collaborate with local businesses to create unique seasonal flavors.
Our flavors range from more traditional options- Dark Chocolate, Earl Grey Tea, Madagascar Vanilla, Pistachio, Salted Caramel, and Toasted Coconut - to fun flavors like Birthday Cake, Mimosa, and Cinnamon Roll.
There are 2 locations for the Macaron Bar in Cincinnati. The first is located in Over the Rhine and the second location is in Hyde Park.
The first time I ordered macarons from the Macaron Bar, I had them delivered to my home. I ordered the variety pack which contained their most popular flavors. A dozen macarons came in a box and once I took a bite, I couldn't stop until I had finished most of the macarons. My favorite flavors were definitely Birthday Cake, Coffee, and Red Velvet. I can honestly say that these macarons were some of the most delicious treats I have ever had.
The macarons aren't cheap since each macaron costs a little over a dollar but with a 4/5 stars review on Yelp, you can bet that the Macaron Bar is becoming quite popular in Cincinnati.
Learning about Macarons
If you are interested in learning how to bake macarons, you can book classes on the Macaron Bar website. Macarons are notoriously difficult to bake because of moisture. The less moisture - the better. It takes continuous practice to bake macarons that come out just right.
Classes offered at the Macaron Bar include
- Intro to Macarons
- Macarons for Kids
- Advanced Decorating
- Pairing Events
The Pairing Events classes allow you to pair macarons with wines, coffees, cheeses, and even beer. You can choose which pairing you prefer and the class will be exclusively focused on that specific pairing. I would definitely go for the coffee and macaron pairing. I love coffee and you get to try 4 different coffees during the class.
For fun classes geared towards adults and kids alike, you can't go wrong with the Macaron Bar. Private classes upon special request are also provided.
If you live outside the Cincinnati area, the Macaron Bar also ships out macarons. There is also a special subscription plan where you can have macarons delivered monthly to your door.
