Atlanta Police Department officer involved in shooting at 710 Peachtree St.

ATLANTA, GA — On July 1, 2021 Atlanta Police Department or APD, through Police Chief Rodney Bryant, has announced that two of its officers were involved in a gunshot in 710 Peachtree St. The incident is now investigated by the APD Major Crimes Unit and assisted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The incident happened on June 30, 2021. From the investigation, it is known that the gunshot was on an apartment building where two adult males were meeting another man, which was later determined to be the suspect, Joseph Lee Humbles, 29. The gunshot happened on the eighth floor of the apartment, where Humbles shot one of the other two men identified as Corey Thornton, 27. The third man escaped without any injury.

The APD then responded to a 911 call of a gunshot by another resident of the apartment at 1 p.m. Officer Khuong Thai and Officer Joshua Lovreta then arrived at the crime scene. After reaching the area of the reported shooting, Humbles immediately fired a shot at the officers and strikes back by the officers and finally deceased due to his shot injuries.

Corey Thornton sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He has no criminal history and is not a suspect in this case.

Officer Khuong Thai sustained multiple apparent gunshot wounds and was transported immediately to a local hospital in a conscious and stable condition.
