GWINNETT COUNTY, GA- Gwinnett County Board of Education on Friday, July 30 appointed Dr. Calvin J. Watts as its new superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools or GCPS.

Dr. Watts is a former GCPS school leader as well as assistant superintendent. Previously, he worked as Superintendent of Kent School District in Washington.

Dr. Watts said that he remained grateful for the opportunities J. Alvin Wilbanks as well as other leaders provided him while he was in Gwinnett… opportunities that let him grow, learn, achieve, and lead. He considered his tenure in GCPS as one of the highlights of his career in education.

He also said that in Gwinnett, he learned from many incredible leaders as well as leadership experiences. In GCPS, he served as an Assistant Principal at Bethesda Elementary, as a Principal at Annistown Elementary and Trickum Middle schools, as a Director of Human Resources, as well as also as an Assistant Superintendent in support of the school and principal leadership until he left to become Superintendent of Kent School District.

Meanwhile, Everton Blair, Jr, the Board Chairman said that their goal was to select the superintendent who would be able to lead Gwinnett County Public Schools during this critical time, building on their legacy of success as well as working with their outstanding staff to serve their students in their system of world-class schools. They feel we had done that and they looked forward to working with Dr. Watts as he leads the district.
