ATLANTA, GA — The Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism has honored Cobb Superior Court Chief Judge Robert D. Leonard for his dedication to society.

As one of eight honorees, Judge Leonard received the Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service last Saturday night. Judge Leonard has given a large portion of his time and talents to community service, according to the Commission.

He has been a member of the Tommy Nobis Center Board of Directors since 2006. One of his main duties is to fight for people with disabilities. He has participated on several board committees and was Chair of the board in 2018-2019.

Judge Leonard also enjoys speaking to children and teenagers about the risks of drugs, alcohol and social media. He has taught young people under Marietta City Schools' Mentoring for Leadership program. Judge Leonard also coaches minor sports groups as a volunteer.

The Supreme Court of Georgia established the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism in 1989, the first organization of its kind in the country. Its main purpose is to enhance professionalism within Georgia's lawyers.

The awards are named after The Honorable Robert Benham. He was a Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. He had been focusing on lawyers' and judges' attention on the society and public service components of professionalism during his career.

The Annual Justice Robert Benham Awards for Community Service were established in 1997 by the Executive Committee of the State Bar of Georgia. This award is to celebrate lawyers and judges who have made remarkable services to society.

They established the award because they want to recognize that volunteerism by many Georgia lawyers stays strong. They want it to inspire all lawyers to become engaged in serving their societies, to develop lawyers' quality of life through the satisfaction they earn from helping others, and to enhance lawyers' public image.
