Eva-Tatiana Siakam, an impassioned writer, draws inspiration from her childhood as a non-English speaking immigrant from western Cameroon to fuel her mission of empowering young girls on their journey to becoming formidable women. Her mother's unwavering commitment to education and imagination ignited Eva-Tatiana's love for books and writing, propelling her into the world of storytelling. Now, as an author, she is driven by the conviction that access to education is a privilege she is fortunate to have, one that she seeks to extend to girls worldwide. Eva-Tatiana's work takes readers on a journey from the landscapes of western Cameroon to the bustling streets of metropolitan D.C., all while celebrating the resilience and strength of women and girls, who remain at the heart of her narratives. Her storytelling is a powerful testament to her dedication to girls' education and women's empowerment. Follow her on Instagram @e.tati.s
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first children’s book and every one of my books thereafter is inspired by my desire to empower women and young girls who aspire for much more than what their socio-economic backgrounds and/or cultural circumstances would allow.
Is there a message in your children’s book that you want readers to grasp?
I want to impart upon my readers the value of utilizing familial love and positive verbal affirmations about all of our unique traits as an effective and powerful tool of instilling self-confidence and pride in oneself. I especially want all the little girls out there to understand that young girls who love themselves grow up to be powerful women… and embracing all of whom and what you are is a vital component of self-love.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I’m currently working on a short poetic prose book titled “Seeds for Black Girls when in Bloom” it’s a poetic prose which encapsulates the essence of Black womanhood. It also serves as an homage to the remarkable unsung heroines who have shaped the world around them by overcoming adversity and thriving in a world that often underestimated their brilliance.
What genre do you consider your book(s)?
I consider my books to be children fiction and poetic prose.
Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?
My mother is the most supportive person in my life when it comes to my writing and all of the other endeavors I wish to pursue. She has encouraged me to strive for more and push myself beyond all limitations while also being a well of wisdom and knowledge from which I have drawn much inspiration.
What book/author are you currently reading or will read within the next few months?
I’m currently reading ‘The Fiery Cross’ in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
As a non-English speaking immigrant child from French speaking Western Cameroon, books became my bridge to the English-speaking world. And in an effort to not only learn this new and exciting language, but to gain a proficient understanding of the subject, at the onset of each school week, my immigrant mother would have me pick out various books at random, all of which were expected of me to read and have a written daily report ready for the purposes of correction. It was in that process I fell in love with writing.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love to read time period books/ historical fiction.
What is your favorite quote?
“The seeds of success in every nation on Earth are best planted in women and children” -Former President of Malawi, Joyce Hilda Banda.
